VICTORIA FALLS

The Victoria Falls is the largest, probably the most beautiful and certainly the most majestic waterfall anywhere in the world. The local people call it "Mosi-oa-tunya" - the smoke that thunders. Here the mighty Zambezi River, halfway along its 2700km length from source to sea and a tranquil one and a half kilometres in breadth, gathers speed for a metre or two and then hurls itself into a narrow chasm more than a hundred metres deep. The very earth trembles, the spray soars hundreds of metres into the sky - the thunder of an incomprehensible weight of falling water that never ceases.
The Falls and the surrounding areas have been declared National Parks and a World Heritage Site and so the area has been preserved from excessive commercialization.

Throughout the Park, are thousands of ancient rock paintings, which are sign-posted and directions available.
