The 12th Annual Sundowner Winter Flyfishing Competition at Oxbow Country Estate - 12 July 2025

Fly fishing at SundownerOxbow takes place under the expert guidance of Wayne Sinclair, the founding member of Sundowner Fly fishing Adventures who has over 30 years of sport and fly-fishing experience in Southern Africa. “We are counting down the days until 56 enthusiastic souls brave the chilly Saturday morning and descend on SunOx (short name for Sundowner Flyfishing Adventures at Oxbow Country Estate) for the 12th Annual Winter Flyfishing Competition,” says Wayne Sinclair, owner of Sundowner Fly Fishing Adventures and coordinator of the event.

The competition is regarded as the premium trout fly fishing competition in Gauteng. SunOx is located 25 km from Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng, on the banks of the Osspruit River, just 40 minutes from Pretoria, Witbank, and Benoni. Oxbow Country Estate is the perfect countryside venue for families, friends, corporates and individuals seeking an absolutely special and unforgettable occasion.

SunOxFishing, is set in the foothills of the Magaliesberg range, near Bronkhorstspruit Dam, and is home to a unique river system with remarkable geographical phenomena known as oxbows.

Nurtured and improved in later years, these waters have now become a life source and haven to trout (Brown & Rainbow), Bass and over 130 recorded species of birdlife including abundant insect and aquatic species.

The gardens, lovingly landscaped over the years, further enhance the tranquillity you will experience when visiting this estate in the country.

Competitors are welcomed with warm coffee and snacks upon arrival. Fishing beats are selected randomly and competitors move an allocated number of beats between each session to ensure that each participant is given the opportunity to fish on the prime spots. Each of the three categories which include Men’s, Ladies and Junior’s qualifies for the trout and species sections.

This competition is known for the wonderful spirit and comradery between the competitors, with lots of laughs and sharing of techniques and tactics. Every year the highlights include: tagged trout cash prize and the opportunity for most competitors to receive one of the many prizes on offer. 

“The Sterkfontein Yellow fish anti poaching project and FOSAF Yellowfish Working Group are once again our charity of choice for this year’s competition and we are honoured to support this worthy cause, as the conservation of our natural resources are consistently under threat" concludes Sinclair.

Bookings
Bookings for adult and junior competitors and costs R1495-00 for adults and R1250-00 for juniors and includes coffee and snacks on arrival, competition entry fee, goodie bag, mid morning snack and awards lunch. Non fishers rates available on request. The event is limited to 56 anglers so be advised to register early to secure a chance to win some amazing prizes. The entries are now fully booked however you are welcome to join the waiting list.
